Year 1

Welcome to Year 1 – Summer Term 2019

Mrs Mitchell, Mrs Dobson, Miss Dowell, Mrs Doran, Mrs Plumb and Mrs Roberts

The Year 1 Team

We hope you have had a lovely Easter holiday.

In the first half of the Summer term we will be delving into the world of plants in our ‘Incredible, Edible garden’ topic. We will be planting seeds and keeping a diary to record their growth, looking at what plants need to survive and going on a hunt to find different types of common garden and wild plants around school. We will also be going on a visit to the local garden centre to identify different types of plants and learn about how they are looked after.

Our second topic, after half-term, will be ‘Summer Safari’. We will be learning about different types of animals and their features, classifying them, and going on a trip to Woburn Safari park to see what animals we can find!

This term we will be developing our English skills through a range of different poems, and the story ‘One Day on our Blue Planet’. The children will be exploring a wide range of poems, looking at the structure and language used.  We will be using our five senses to help write our own poems. We will also be looking at letter writing and finally writing non-fiction fact files about different animals.

In Maths we will be following the Maths Mastery programme in order to deepen and develop children's knowledge and understanding of number and problem solving. This half term we will be focusing on length, weight and volume, then moving on to explore numbers from 50 to 100. In the second half of the term, we will be learning to add and subtract numbers within 100, and then begin to look at money.

Our PE lesson will be on a Thursday for both classes, please ensure your child has both indoor and outdoor PE kit, including warm clothing and trainers each week.

Homework booklets will be sent home on a Thursday and this will need to be completed and handed in by the following Tuesday.  All the homework for the first-half term will be included in the homework booklet.  We hope that this will help you as parents and carers, so you have more of an insight into what homework is coming up and enable you to plan ahead if you need to.  Although all homework is sent out, it will continue to be marked weekly.  Please ensure your child gives in their homework every Tuesday.  The spelling test happens on a Thursday so please make sure spelling books are handed in on this day.  You will receive new spellings every Friday.  All children are expected to have read or shared a book at home a minimum of 4 times over a 7 day period. This should be recorded in their reading record book.

We would like to invite parents and carers to join us each Monday, during Morning Challenge, in the classroom for a Parents Briefing to let you know what we have been doing and what is coming up during the week.  Please could you ensure that your children come and sit on the carpet during the briefing and that younger siblings sit with yourselves.

Our class library day will be on a Friday.  Each week there will be a selection of books for your child to choose one to bring home and share for the week.  In your child’s tray there is a form to just pop the name of the book that your child has borrowed for the week.
