Year 1

Welcome back to Year 1 - Spring Term 2020

We hope you have had a exciting Christmas holiday and are ready and feeling refreshed for the new term ahead!

In the first half of the Spring term the children will be delving into the past and exploring the similarities and differences between old and new toys in our topic of 'To infinity and beyond!'. We will begin the term with a visit from Peterborough Museum, giving us a chance to explore and play with a range of old toys- some familiar and some more obscure! In science we will be comparing and sorting old and new toys, focusing on their materials and properties of. In DT we will be challenging the children to make a moving picture using a range of materials. During our RE lessons we will be learning about the religion of Islam, what their beliefs our and all about their place of worship.

Our second topic, after half term, will be ‘Wonderful Weather’.  During this topic we will learn about different types of weather, seasons and all about growing. Linking to this in geography we will be looking at how the world has different climates and how this can change what can grow there.

ENGLISH

The books that we will be developing our English skills through are ‘Whatever Next’ and ‘Traction Man’.  We will initially be writing a recount of our toys museum visit, describing the toys using adjectives in our sentence writing. Then we will explore zooming off to the moon with Baby Bear in 'Whatever next!' and retelling the story. When learning about 'Traction Man', we will be predicting and thinking about how the characters are feeling, then focus on writing descriptive sentences about the characters and events in the story. We will continue to focus on using capital letters, finger spaces and fulls stops in our sentences and checking that they make sense!

MATHS

In Maths we will be following the NCETM programme, in order to consolidate and ensure children have the basic skills of number, teaching through a 'mastery' approach. This half term we will be focusing on having an awareness of 'ten', moving onto counting in multiples of ten, using lots of practical equipment to support and consolidate this. During the second half of the term, we will then be progressing on to working with identifying tens and ones in numbers up to 100 (e.g. 56 is equal to 5 tens and 6 ones).

P.E

Our PE lesson will be on a Thursday for both classes, please ensure your child has both indoor and outdoor PE kit, including warm clothing and trainers each week. Safety precautions: Please ensure that if your child's hair is long enough to be tied up, that it is; in addition if your child has their ears pierced please remove these on PE days or cover with plasters/tape.

HOMEWORK

Homework booklets will be sent home on a Thursday and this will need to be completed and handed in by the following Tuesday.  All the homework for the first-half term will be included in the homework booklet.  We hope that this will help you as parents and carers, so you have more of an insight into what homework is coming up and enable you to plan ahead if you need to.  Although all homework is sent out, it will continue to be marked weekly.  Please ensure your child gives in their homework every Tuesday.  All children are expected to have read or shared a book at home a minimum of 4 times over a 7 day period. This should be recorded in their reading record book.

SPELLINGS

Spellings will now be sent out half-termly in the homework book. Please only practise the spellings for the appropriate week, which will be tested in school on Fridays.
