Year 1

Welcome to Year 1 – Spring Term 2018

Mrs Mitchell, Mrs Dobson, Miss Dowell, Mrs Maddox,              Mrs Doran, Mrs Plumb and Mrs Roberts

The Year 1 Team

In the first half of the Spring term we will be venturing into the world of toys through our ‘To Infinite and Beyond’ topic. We will be looking at and talking about our favourite toys that we like to play with. We will be exploring how they work and what they are made of. Peterborough Museum will be visiting us and bringing with them their collection of toys from the past. We will learn about how children used to play with these toys years ago. We will use what we have learnt to create our own ‘What am I?’ poems.

Our second topic, after half term, will be ‘It’s raining, it’s pouring’ where we will be learning about seasons and weather.

The books that we will be developing our English skills through are ‘Traction Man’ and ‘Lila and the secret of Rain’. We will be retelling and acting out Traction Man’s missions and then writing our own mission for him to complete. We will also be looking at some non-fiction texts, poetry and information books. The children will be using information they have learnt about toys from the past to create poetry and a class information book.

In Maths we will be following the Maths Mastery programme in order to deepen and develop children's knowledge and understanding of number and problem solving. This half term we will be focusing on numbers to 50 and using these numbers to add and subtract. We will then be exploring length, weight and volume.

Our PE lesson will be on a Friday for both classes, please ensure your child has both indoor and outdoor PE kit, including warm clothing and trainers each week.

Homework booklets will be sent home on a Thursday and this will need to be completed and handed in by the following Tuesday. All the homework for the first-half term will be included in the homework booklet. We hope that this will help you as parents and carers, so you have more of an insight into what homework is coming up and enable you to plan ahead if you need to. Although all homework is sent out, it will continue to be marked weekly. Please ensure your child gives in their homework every Tuesday. The spelling test happens on a Thursday so please make sure spelling books are handed in on this day. You will receive new spellings every Friday. All children are expected to

have read or shared a book at home a minimum of 4 times over a 7 day period. This should be recorded in their reading record book.

We would like to invite parents and carers to join us each Monday, during Morning Challenge, in the classroom for a Parents Briefing to let you know what we have been doing and what is coming up during the week. Please could you ensure that your children come and sit on the carpet during the briefing and that younger siblings sit with yourselves.

Our class library day will be on a Friday. Each week there will be a selection of books for your child to choose one to bring home and share for the week. In your child’s tray there is a form to just pop the name of the book that your child has borrowed for the week.
