SOUNDS-WRITE PHONICS
Phonics at St Botolph’s
From September 2020 we are delighted to adopt a programme called Sounds Write. Here is a summary of what will remain the same and what will be different from the previous way phonics was taught.
Phonic sessions
Will still be taught everyday with the whole class
Letter sounds
Will no longer be taught using actions or pictures. They will always be taught in the context of a word.
Reading books
Will no longer be given colour bands (red, pink, yellow etc) but have been organised according to the order they are taught in – these are called units. You will be informed by your child’s teacher which unit your child is working on and which reading books you should expect to receive.
Here are some very useful links explaining more about Sounds Write
An introduction from John Walker, the founder – although it written for parents of children in Reception, it is a useful read for all -
