English and Maths

In Summer 1 we will be using the stunning book, A River to guide our learning. Looking at the imaginary journey from the city to the sea. From factories to farmlands and freeways to forest. Using what they have learnt the children will write their own circular narrative and a personal experience narrative.  We will continue to extend our sentences using the conjunctions taught as well as learning new conjunctions – that and if.  We will also learn how and when an apostrophe is used and apply this learning to our writing.  Studying and analysing model texts will provide opportunities to extend our vocabulary and to understand how to use particular writing features in an extended piece of writing.

Building on from adding 2-digit numbers, the children will be subtracting through re-grouping.  They will explore this strategy using diennes and then move onto written methods of column subtraction.  The children will also focus on the geometry unit of the properties of shapes.  They will build on prior knowledge of 2D and 3D shapes including shape names, properties and lines of symmetry.  They will have lots of opportunities to discuss, compare and sort both 2D and 3D shapes.  Finally the children will develop their knowledge and skills linked to money.  They will practise counting and recognising coins as well as finding different combinations of coins that equal the same amounts of money.  They will use these skills to help solve simple problems that involve addition and subtraction of money.
