Year 1

Welcome to Year 1 - Autumn Term 2018

Mrs Mitchell, Mrs Dobson, Mrs Simmonds, Mrs Doran, Mrs Plumb and Mrs Roberts

The Year 1 Team

We hope you have had a lovely summer holiday!

In the first half of the Autumn term the children will be putting on their astronaut boots and blasting off into Space when learning about our topic ‘The aliens are coming!’  Not only will we be discovering what we might find in Space through stories and non-fiction texts, we will also be learning more about our own planet, planet Earth.  Through looking at globes and maps we will be finding out about the continents and oceans that make up our world.  During our RE lessons we will be learning about how God made the world in the ‘Creation story’.

Our second topic, after half term, will be ‘Once upon a time’.  During this topic we will continue our learning through well-known traditional tales, with a focus on ‘The Christmas Jolly Postman’ in the build up to Christmas.  When learning about materials in Science we will be exploring which materials are most suitable for the 3 little pigs to build their houses.  We will be carrying out an investigation to test our ideas.

ENGLISH

The books that we will be developing our English skills through are ‘The man on the moon’ and ‘Beegu’.  We will enjoy pretending to travel to the moon like Bob and develop our sentence writing skills by writing post cards about our experiences.  Through our English lessons we will be learning how we can use adjectives and the 5 senses in our writing.  When learning about ‘Beegu’ we will be discussing how the characters are feeling throughout the story, what tells us that they are feeling this way and the reasons why.  Using hot seating and role-play to explore the characters’ feelings, the children will be writing a class poem about Beegu.

MATHS

In Maths we will be following the Maths Mastery programme in order to deepen and develop children's knowledge and understanding of number and problem solving. This half term we will be focusing on numbers to 10 which will involve counting, reading, writing, identifying, representing, doubling and halving and comparing.  We will then be moving onto addition and subtraction within 10 and in the second half of the term learning about 2D and 3D shapes.  We will be developing and applying the skills learnt previously by exploring numbers to 20 towards the end of the term.

P.e

Our PE lesson will be on a Friday for both classes, please ensure your child has both indoor and outdoor PE kit, including warm clothing and trainers each week.

HOMEWORK

Homework booklets will be sent home on a Thursday and this will need to be completed and handed in by the following Tuesday.  All the homework for the first-half term will be included in the homework booklet.  We hope that this will help you as parents and carers, so you have more of an insight into what homework is coming up and enable you to plan ahead if you need to.  Although all homework is sent out, it will continue to be marked weekly.  Please ensure your child gives in their homework every Tuesday.  All children are expected to have read or shared a book at home a minimum of 4 times over a 7 day period. This should be recorded in their reading record book.

MORNING CHALLENGE

We would like to invite parents and carers to join us each Monday, during Morning Challenge, in the classroom for a Parents Briefing to let you know what we have been doing and what is coming up during the week.  Please could you ensure that your children come and sit on the carpet during the briefing and that younger siblings sit with yourselves.

Our class library day will be on a Friday.  Each week there will be a selection of books for your child to choose one to bring home and share for the week.  In your child’s tray there is a form to just pop the name of the book that your child has borrowed for the week.
