Welcome to Reception - Autumn Term 2018

Mrs Sherriff, Mrs Appleby, Miss Clements and Mrs Monaghan. - The Reception Team!

Welcome to the beginning of an exciting first year at St Botolph's Primary school! The autumn term in Reception focuses on teaching children the school rules and expectations so that they can effectively adapt to school life. It is also important in building strong relationships with their peers and the adults within school.

Our topic for the first half of the autumn term is 'All about me', this will help us to get to know the children and will also enable the children to become familiar with other children in the class.

In Reception the children will be taking part in daily Phonics sessions. During the first part of the term, in phonics, the children will be working within Phase 1 and 2 of 'Letters and Sounds'. This involves the children recognising that letters make sounds. They begin to learn the initial sounds within Phase 2. Each sound has a song and an action to learn to help the children remember them. If you would like to become familiar with these sounds at home you can find them on YouTube, just search for 'jolly phonics letters and sounds in order'.

In Maths we will focus on pattern, shape and measure to begin with. The children will encounter lots of opportunities to compare everyday objects by weight and length in the environment and begin to learn the names of simple 2D shapes. Within this half term they will also be deepening their understanding of the number system, with a particular emphasis on numerals 1 to 5. This will also include finding one more and one less than the number.

We have PE once a week and our PE day is a Friday. The children will need their PE kits, but they do not need plimsolls as they will take part in these sessions with bare feet in the hall.

Learning Logs will be sent out every Thursday and will be need to be brought back into school every Tuesday.

During our morning challenge time on a Friday the children will get an opportunity to take home a library book. In our Thursday morning challenge time there will be a 'Thursday briefing' where you will be able to find out what the children have been learning that week and any other information that we need to pass on to you.
