The School Council is made up of 24 children, all of whom are voted onto the council by the children in their class. Two children per class are elected, four from each year group, and they serve for one year. The School Council was established as a means to give the children a voice in how the school is organized and an opportunity to make changes in areas they feel do not work or could be improved. They have a small budget to spend in the way they think is best. School Council meets every fortnight and there is a set agenda including class proposals. At these meetings the School Council representatives discuss key issues and then report back to their classes. Suggestions are then taken from each class on the ideas that have been discussed. These are shared at the following School Council meeting. Pupils’ views are regularly sought, for example we are working towards becoming an eco school and a survey has been carried involving all the children. School Council has also been very involved at looking at the school’s vision and values as well as the development of the school garden, fund raising and recycling.
When we hold interviews for key staff appointments, representatives for the school council have an opportunity to meet the candidates and ask them questions. Their views are then fed back to the interview panel. Click here for details about the Eco-Council
