Eco Council

The Eco Council is made up 16 children in key stage two. We meet regularly to discuss targets in our action plan and work on on-going projects to achieve the Green Flag Award. We also organise theme days such as ‘Power Down Day’ and ‘Healthy Eating Day’. Click here to see our Action Plan.
The Eco Council have a range of responsibilities around the school, including eco-monitors and litter pickers. The eco-monitors encourage pupils and staff to be more ‘eco-friendly’ around the school. They do spot checks regularly through the week and each class scores points for things such as making sure electrical equipment is off when it is not being used and that we recycle and compost what we can. The class with the most points is announced during Monday assemblies.

Tuck Shop
Thank you to all of you that responded to our questionnaires. We got a really positive response and your answers have helped us enormously with our planning. Since then we have looked into what foods we could sell and different suppliers, discussed ways of paying and have lots of volunteers signed up to help. We are hoping to open the tuck shop during Spring Term 2012 so look out for more information soon!

Eco Awards

In July 2011 a few of our Eco Council members went to the Peterborough Eco Awards held at Hampton College. This was an opportunity for schools to share projects they have been working on and carry out lots of Eco related activities. We presented the work we had done so far towards the Tuck Shop and received the Judges Special Award for our enthusiasm in presenting our project!

Healthy Eating Day
On 31st October we had a ‘Healthy Eating Day’. The whole school was involved in a range of activities to get us all thinking about the foods that contribute to a healthy lifestyle. Some children designed their own fruit snacks and drinks; others used fruit and vegetables in art and film.

Science Week
During the summer term we had a ‘Science Week’. It started off with a Power Down Day where we tried hard for the whole day not to use any energy and help us to be more aware of the energy we normally use. This meant we could not use the interactive whiteboards, computers or turn on the lights. Luckily it was a sunny day! We had borrowed energy kits from PECT and each class was involved in investigating renewable sources of energy. On the Thursday we all dressed in blue to help raise money for Water Aid and we learnt the importance of saving water.
